Most Easy Ways to Protect Your Kids from Sun
Everyone including your kids needs some sun exposure; because it’s the primary source of vitamin D. Little amount of sun exposure is enough for your kids. But unprotected exposure to the ultraviolet rays that come from sun damage your skin, eyes, immune system, and even cause cancer.
With the precautions given below, you can save your child from all these problems.
Avoid the strongest rays
Keep your children out of direct sunlight at times when sun is strongest. Ask your kids to play in shady play areas. And, don’t forget to use the sunscreen.
Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside, and also apply it after swimming or sweating. Though sunscreen is a necessity in the summer, it’s also important to apply it in hot sun during the winter times also.
Use a good amount of sunscreen. General rule is – use about two ounces of sunscreen on the body and one teaspoon on the face.
Use a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15. One with a higher SPF is always a better choice. SPF decides how long one can stay in the sun without burning. So, if your child burns after 10 min of sun exposure, a 15 SPF sunscreen will keep him or her safe for 150 min.
Check the bottle
Make sure your sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB rays, because both are dangerous to your skin. Make sure your sunscreen has one of the following: zinc oxide, avobenzone, Mexoryl SX or titanium dioxide.
Care for lips too
Apart from using a sunscreen, also use an SPF lip balm on your child’s lips, because lips burn frequently so as your skin.
Sun can also cause damage unprotected eyes, and cause eye diseases like cataracts and cancer. To protect your child’s eyes, make them wear sunglasses that offer 100% protection from UV rays.
