If you are interested in adopting a child you need to understand the fact that adoption involves a process. And, you have to understand that the procedure for adopting a child involves not only emotions but also time. It may take from 30 days to possibly 2 years to finalize an adoption.

Here are the stages involved in the adoption process.

4 to 12 weeks – This initial time is when you have to be very careful about how you have to proceed. Educate yourselves about what all are involved in the adoption process. Read some books on adoption, find out the groups that can offer required information, and also use the web.

12 to 24 weeks – There are various categories, which you come across in your research process. In this time, you have to come to a tentative decision on which category you’re interested in. When making a decision, don’t forget to consider your and the child’s background.

24 to 36 weeks - Finish your home study, and you are now a competent adoptive parent.

36 weeks to 1 year – Get the information of either a local or international child. Also, go for a medical review of the child to if he or she is foreign. Also, study various financial and other aspects involved in adopting the child.

1 to 2 years – Now is the time you have to place the child in your home. Take the help of adoption support groups to learn how to connect with your new child.

1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years – In this final stage, you have to decide on the ease of the child settling into the new home. If you think you are at ease with the kid, with the help of an attorney you can legally finalize the adoption.
