The child’s first dental visit is very important. He or she builds up rapport with the dentist. A general checkup is done and the dentist approaches the child in a friendly manner so that the child likes the dentist. Most children hesitate to go to the dentist. It is a painful experience for them. If in the early stages, they build up a good rapport with the dentist, then they would be comfortable in the subsequent visits.

Parents should not make the child afraid of going to a dentist. They should not give any indication that it would be a painful experience. They should make the child like the dentist and look forward to the visit. The child should not be frightened of the dentist. Other family members should talk encouragingly of the dentist. Overall, the child should be excited about going to the dentist.

How Can a Parent Make a Child Like the Dentist?

The visit to the dentist should be “fun”. The child should not be afraid of the dentist

Explain in a positive manner the advantage of visiting the dentist. Do not feel nervous yourself. Any anxiety on your part, may deter the child from seeing the dentist

You can explain to the child that visiting the dentist was part of growing up

Inform the child that the dentist would be friendly and gentle

Do not use the world “needle” “pull” “pain” etc. as these words would frighten the child

As a parent you can stay with the child in the dentist’s room on the first visit

Do not get upset if the child cries. It is quite normal to do so

In case you are requested to stay in the waiting room, do so. The dentist may like to be alone with the child. This helps him or her to build up rapport with the child

Be reassuring. Let the child not be afraid of the dentist. The visit should be an exciting event

Let the child know that the dentist will not hurt him or her

Choose a dentist who will make the child very comfortable on his or her first visit. The dentist should be child-friendly

Be free to ask the dentist questions about the observation, and subsequent follow-up

Take the child out for a treat after the visit. Some sort of reward

A child should enjoy his or her first visit to the dentist. The visit should be as comfortable as possible. The child should be encouraged to build up a friendly rapport with the dentist. As a parent, you should ensure that the child is not afraid of the dentist.
