Spanking is defined as “slapping on the buttocks with a flat object or with the open hand, as for punishment.” Spanking a child may seem harmful. Many feel it should be made illegal. However, the intention behind spanking makes the difference. The degree of spanking should also be considered. Spanking can become an abuse if it is overdone.
Spanking as a form of discipline:
Parents draw lines for proper behavior by disciplining their children. Apart from warning, scolding, many parents spank their children. Many successful, well brought up individuals say that spanking helped them.
Why do parents spank?
Some parents spank their children out of love, when they feel the other forms of discipline do not work. Some parents react to their own moods and spank their children.
Is spanking ok?
Spanking should be done sparingly. Only when you feel you cannot get your message across with words, then spanking is ok. For example if your child puts his hand on a hot stove, crosses the road carelessly etc. Spanking should not be done out of anger, but out of love and concern for your child.
Avoid spanking as much as possible:
Spanking should be avoided as much as possible by taking an effort to understand the child. Explain the child why a particular way is wrong. Also, try to find out why the kid is misbehaving or not listening to you. Spanking should be the last option, only when you feel that the child is deliberately misbehaving.
About spanking being made illegal:
Most parents would not prefer the law to dictate their actions. However, responsible and loving parents would know exactly when it is appropriate to spank the child. As for parents who use their kids to take out their frustration and anger, spanking certainly becomes an abuse.
Spanking if made illegal, may keep some responsible parents from bringing up their child in a proper way. It may even protect the child from an abusive parent. However, parents feel that spanking occasionally when situations require followed by a loving talk, forgiveness, is ok.
