How To Deal With A Stubborn Child

Posted on January 12, 2009 in Latest News

Stubborn children are sometimes a bit difficult to deal with. Hours of counseling and guidance to help the child walk on the right way turns out to be useless, as the child will end up doing what he/she wants to do only. The behavior may be negative and may cause great harm and in spite of lot of persuasion the child will refuse to listen.

Here are some tips on how parents should handle a stubborn child.

Be firm:
When you have refused to allow the child view television late in the night, stick to it. The child may cry, weep and wail and may also create a huge scene but do not give in. Once you give in, the child will know how to have his/her way every time they want something.

Be Serious: Parents should be very serious when correcting their child. Laughing or giggling and not being serious will not get you anywhere.

Reinforcement: Guiding your child’s behavior on the right path through reinforcement is a very apt technique. When the child has done something negative you punish the child by withdrawing what the child likes the most e.g. favorite dish or cartoon. But when the child has obeyed you and has done something positive you reward the child by introducing something positive in the child’s environment. For e.g. taking the child out to his favorite eatery or store.

Lead By Example:
This is a very important factor. Are you stubborn? And display this trait often at home. If yes? Your child may be imitating your behavior, and be acting just the way you are behaving. Therefore, if you want to change your child, make an attempt to change yourself first.

Keep these points in mind and guide your child  the right way.
