What Effect Does Parenting Styles Have On Children at School?
The social and academic life of a child is dramatically influenced by the styles and methods that parents employ at home. In general, the behavior of the child is dependent upon the parents’ responsiveness. Parenting styles are categorized into four different types, all of which affect a child’s performance inside and outside the home.
- Authoritarian Parenting
Children of authoritarian parents are more likely to have problems with authority and may be disrespectful toward authority figures. This stems from the child’s frustration with frequently being demanded to meet expectations or follow rules but feeling that their needs or concerns are being met. On the opposite hand, children of authoritarian parents may be very compliant and submissive but suffer from depression or a negative self-image and social difficulties. .
- Permissive Parents
Children from this kind of background are generally more involved in social activities as they are usually comfortable interacting with people however their academic performance is often below average. This can be because of a difficulty complying with rules or respecting authority figures due to a lack of discipline at home. Oftentimes children with permissive parents may be viewed as “spoiled” because they may present arrogance or a sense of entitlement. This can present problems with completing schoolwork, meeting deadlines and regulating their moods and behaviors.
- Authoritative Parenting
Authoritative parenting is generally believed to result in overall successful, well-adjusted and happy children because of the balance of parental demand and responsiveness involved. Children raised in authoritative households are most likely to have a healthy self-image, meet the demands set for them, understand and comply with consequences of their actions and uphold an overall happy disposition.
