Communicating Effectively with Children

The way you communicate with your child comes under parenting skills. It is necessary to build two way communication whenever you are dealing with your child. Positive two way communication will increase your child’s self-esteem.

If you want to practice good communication skills with your child in future, you should practice open communication with your child in their early years.

Early childhood experiences help the child to manage stress,frustration and feel confident in their future lives. Between the ages of two and six years, a child learns to develop his self-concept.He begins to start thinking about his family and community.

  • Make sure that you listen to your child carefully. Respect your child’s views and observe the tone of his voice.
  • No matter how young is your child, respect your child’s right to his opinion.
  • Involve your child in serious discussions.Do not critizise or blame your child

  • Make sure that you get involved with your child. Show interest to your child in whatever he is talking. Assure them that you will be always there to support them whenever needed.
  • Whenever your child wants to say something, turn off your television or stop reading the newspaper. Look into your child’s eyes whenever he is talking
  • When you see that your child has something important to tell you,avoid taking a call and listen to your child patiently
  • Whenever you talk with your child,sit with your child. Get down to the child’s level and then talk
  • If your are angry with your child’s behavior,do not say anything until you cool down your temper. You can say anything to your child in anger which can hurt your child
  • Don’t interrupt when your child is speaking. Listen to your child patiently. Be courteous to your child as you are with your friend
  • Always assure your child that you accept him no matter whatever he has done.
