Fragile X Syndrome- Treatment with Educational Options

Fragile X Syndrome doesn’t have any cure at present because scientists and researchers have been unable to find the cure. There are various treatments to reduce and minimize the symptoms. One of the treatments for Fragile X syndrome is educational options.

Educational options

Under federal law, Fragile X children, including those having severe mental retardation, are guaranteed free and appropriate public education. IDEA (the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) in 1997 made it possible for kids with disabilities to get free educational devices and services, and to help these kids learn as well as they can.

Each kid from birth to three years of age is provided with early intervention programs by every state, so these kids should qualify for the services. The law states that Fragile X kids must have the best combination with small group work, regular classroom and one-on-one tutoring.

Not every individual with Fragile X may have special needs or mental impairment. Thus, just a medical diagnosis doesn’t guarantee special education services. The kids need to have certain learning or cognitive deficits. Thus, parents can contact the special education coordinator to know how they can have their kid examined to know whether they qualify for the IDEA service.

When a kid qualifies for the special service, the team of people, which includes child development specialists, school psychologists, teachers, caregivers, and their parents, will work to design a plan called IEP (Individual Education Plan) for the kid. Based on a kid’s capabilities and needs, the IEP includes special learning classes. Thus, the team also decides about the type of classroom placement for the kid.

Fragile X kids should be evaluated by their special-service team on a regular basis. Thus, they can be helpful in determining how good the kid is doing, and whether they need special treatment to learn while getting the best care. In general, Fragile X kids are placed in three classrooms with options based on their specific needs and abilities. These three options are as follows:

Full incorporation in the classroom

Instead of kids with only special needs, the kids spends their whole day within the regular classroom. Thus, they get the whole day activity with special learning classes along with the special needs. These circumstances are sometimes called mainstreaming. Along with other kids, a specialist will be working with the kid in the same classroom. There may be some other assistants to help the kid with certain tasks.

Incorporation with pull-out services

In this type, the kid spends almost the whole day in a regular classroom. But, they attend a part of the day in small-group classes for one or more development therapies, such as physical therapies or speech-language therapies with specialists. This arrangement gives the kid exposure to other kids who do not have special needs, and also helps every individual to focus the attention on their special needs.

Special Education Classroom

The Fragile X kids can do much better within smaller special education classes rather than the regular classroom. Special education classrooms with fewer kids help to offer more attention from the specialists on every individual. Such programs can be offered in central locations, and at schools with a larger area. Thus, for kids with special needs, the regional and special education centers provide designed equipment and special facilities. For some kids, a special school is needed that provides special facilities for kids with similar disabilities.

Placement decisions must be based on every individual’s abilities and needs. Thus, the decision should provide kids with the best chance so that they can get the maximum possible outcome from the education and special needs.
