How Your Parenting can be More Effective

The way you talk to your child affects the way he/she grows. It is very important that you talk to your child in a polite and a respectful manner. Parents often complain that their children are stubborn, rude or do not talk politely. It may well be a reflection on the way the parents themselves communicate which can be seen in their children. Parents should be careful how they ask for things and avoid falling into the habit of speaking in a rough and scolding tone.

Here are a few Dos and Don’ts which will help in dealing skillfully with a difficult child.

Dos and Don’ts

  • Saying something like “We will start as soon as you come back.” is much preferable to saying “Hurry up! Everyone is waiting for you.”.
  • Here is a situation that many parents will recognize – both children speaking at the same time. In order to stop one of them, the parent says to one child “Please be quiet, I cannot hear if you both speak together”. In fact, a good alternative would be to say, “I do want to listen you too but can I do it as soon as your brother/sister finishes.”.
  • When parents want their children to do something they may be tempted to use a little bribery. For example, if you want your child to clean his/her room. Often parents find themselves saying “If you clean your room then I will get you a phone/video game/football boots.”. Another way to say the same thing would be “I will be glad to give you a phone/video game/football boots as long as you clean your room”.

These are a few basic tips you can work on in order to have a better relationship with your child. Childhood is after all a very sensitive age so, it is very important that parents take care of how they behave towards their children.
