How to Discipline Your Child Without Shouting

Disciplining your child does not mean simply shouting at them or spanking them when you are angry and irritated. Parents usually think about spanking or shouting at children as the only means of discipline. Shouting and spanking in anger does not make children more cooperative, instead it makes them more aggressive and rebellious. Parents can consider using other means of disciplining their children.

How to Discipline your Child without Shouting

Here are a few tips that can help you in disciplining your child, without having to shout or spank them.

  • Focus on teaching your child virtues and good values. It determines their behavior in the end.
  • Take time to train your child what you expect of him.
  • Appropriate discipline teaches your child to be patient, cooperative, composed and makes them confident to face the world.
  • Never be rude towards your child.
  • Make some simple, fair rules and state them clearly as this helps your child to realize that he has to follow the rules. Make the rules simple and clear for him to understand and follow.
  • Use words rather than physical methods while disciplining your child, but refrain from using harsh words.
  • Try to get to the root of the problem and make your kid realize that he is an important member of the family.
  • You can consider ignoring some of their small childish issues and leave discipline for serious offences.
  • Give the child some time to solve his own problem in his own way.
  • Give positive reinforcement when they do something good. Praise him/her or you can reward them physically with a star sticker or new book or toy.
  • Parents have the option of using natural consequences to discipline their child. Natural consequences help them to become more responsible and help them to realize how the world works.
  • Parents should try to phrase things in a positive manner rather than in a negative way because positive statements help the child to do what is appropriate. It is not enough to say no to a child, but rather teach them a better alternative.
  • The last but the most important thing is that you need to respect your child and make him realize that you love him unconditionally.
