Tips to Take Care of Premature Babies

30% of newborn babies spend some time in neonatal intensive care unit. Some of the babies have breathing problems; some have different types of illnesses. The most common reason for staying in the intensive care unit is prematurity. Premature babies stay in intensive care units because their organs are not developed enough.

Here are some tips that you can follow while you are taking care of your premature babies.

  • The first thing that you can do is to be with your baby as much as you can
  • Some premature babies stay in an incubator and cannot be taken out. In these cases even sitting with them, talking to them and holding their hand can help them immensely.
  • It is a bit difficult to breastfeed some premature babies. But, the baby will benefit from all of the nutrients that come from your milk. It is also good for your milk supply.
  • Try to get involved in your baby’s care plan as much as you can. Talk to the nurses and see what you can do to help them. Most likely you would be able to feed and rock him/her to sleep.
  • Let the nurses know about your feelings and concerns that you have for your baby. Ask them to explain in detail the steps in taking care of a premature baby so you would be prepared when he/she comes home. Premature babies need special care. So, if you know these special steps, it would be easier for you and healthier for your baby.
  • You can also take a CPR course.

It can be a scary task to take care of a premature baby, but you can care for your baby easily with the right knowledge.
